Csongor and Tünde (1830), a verse play by Mihály Vörösmarty (1800–1855), a gem of Hungarian Romanticism and one of the cornerstones of Hungarian drama, is based upon a late 16th century romance, History of a Prince Named Árgirus and a Fairy Maiden by Albert Gergei, although it embodies a vast cultural heritage extending from folk tales through Shakespeare and Mozart’s The Magic Flute to European Romanticism. Nonetheless, it is a work of exceptional originality. Like most 20th century composers who have written operas based on outstanding plays, Attila Bozay has closely adhered to Vörösmarty’s work.
