The greatest of all myths tells how the Thracian singer Orpheus loses his beloved Eurydice to death, saves her from the underground world but loses her again. This highly dramatic and tragic story was extremely popular with composers of the early seventeenth century who express Orpheus’ sentiments, joys and laments in virtuoso, moving airs.
