Spanish instrumental and orchestral music from the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth has, until very recently, been much neglected by cultural institutions, publishers and even Spanish performers, so that it has not enjoyed the projection undoubtedly owed to one of Europe’s most important artistic legacies. The works in this second volume of Spanish delights make clear the high creative standards of music’s so-called Generation of 98, also known as the Generation of the maestros, a school of composers which magnificently expressed the feelings of moral, political and social crisis Spain suffered following the loss of the colonies of Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines, in highly-inspired scores of great beauty and including such notable items as Roberto Goberna’s patriotic Marcha brillante dedicated to Alfonso XIII in which echoes of the Spanish National Anthem can be heard, Lamentación by Federico Olmeda or Impresión nocturna by Andrés Gaos, a work of strong emotional content and openly Neo-Romantic stamp, which was played at the composer’s funeral
