About
Part of the inspiration for this opera came from librettist Alan Riach’s reading of the poem 'Empty Vessel' by Hugh McDermont. In this a character comes across a griefstricken woman who is singing to a dead child. The point of the poem is that we have the capacity to recover from grievous loss through song. The story of the opera explores three souls in crisis. The setting is colonial New Zealand, although the story itself is universal.
