This CD is the first comprehensive collection of UK composer Gwyn Pritchard’s main works, spanning nearly 40 years of his rich output.

Featuring, amongst others, pianist Nicholas Hodges and cellist Beat Schneider, the compositions range from solos to ensemble pieces.

Although born in Yorkshire in 1948, most of Pritchard’s activities as a composer have taken place abroad. After a performance at the 1979 Warsaw Autumn Festival a long and fruitful musical relationship developed with many Polish musicians and festivals that was to culminate in his being featured composer, alongside Lutoslawski, at the 1989 International New Music Week.

Pritchard’s music for orchestra, chamber ensembles, vocal works, music for solo instruments and pieces employing electronics has been performed around the world, often by players of international stature, and he has been represented at leading international festivals, in many European countries, in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and of course throughout Britain. It has also been widely broadcast, often under his own direction, on both radio and television, by the BBC and by other networks in the UK and abroad.

Most recently, a new work commissioned by the BBC Symphony Orchestra is scheduled for inclusion in their 2008/09 season.

Often concerned with duality and the deployment of extremes, Pritchard’s music is both direct and elusive and an acknowledgement of its composer’s skill in articulating this balance between the known and the unknown, between things experienced and those yet to be discovered.
