Celebrations, good food and music have always gone hand in hand.
Just as GEFILTE FISH has various ingredients, so does Jewish music:
Liturgical song, Klezmer melodies, ancient folk songs, theatre hits which have entered the folk song canon, songs from the resistance, from the ghetto, Zionist and Israeli songs…
Always telling about life, joy and sorrow, tears and laughs… they are songs that somehow seem familiar to us.
Every country in which Jewish music has found its place has from its own heritage of traditional music, folk songs and folk daces, made its own contribution, thus resulting in a unique mixture of styles.
The Yiddish songs on this CD have their roots in Klezmer music. This is the traditional instrumental wedding music, festival music and dance music of east European Jews.
GEFILT FISH are not concerned with keeping up traditions purely for the sake of musicology or the science of language: "We are more concerned with keeping alive something of a world which unfortunately is already partly lost to us, and which is so fatefully linked to our own world. Maybe we can let a part of the humanity, the laughing, the humour the special emotionality and will to live and pain and suffering from which these songs originate, be heard again.
