Première recordings of two major works by Hugues Dufourt, a leading light of the ‘Spectral’ school of composers, who in the 1970s began to analyse the ‘inner life’ of sound. Written for large conventional forces, both these pieces reflect Dufourt’s view that “the orchestra still remains our best synthesiser”. Challenging but intriguing sounds are the result.
