This 10 CD compilation is the only complete collection of the symphonies of Dmitry Shostakovich conducted by his son Maxim Shostakovich. The project is the only one of its kind, because although the younger Shostakovich has recorded his father's symphonies with various orchestras all over the world, this is (and will most likely remain) the only complete collection recorded with one orchestra. This compilation of live recordings was released to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Shostakovich’s birth on September 25 2006.

Thanks to Maxim Shostakovich's relationship to his father's works, this project is marked by the highest authenticity; Dmitry Shostakovich devoted both fatherly and musical care to his son, dedicating a number of pieces to him and entrusting him with the conducting of more than one important premiere. This authenticity, together with the outstanding performance of the orchestra, chorus and soloists, was noted by BBC Music Magazine, which recommended Supraphon's Symphony No. 13 “ Babi Yar” as a “reference” recording.

“A world-class performance, authentically at one with the sound, syntax and imagery of Shostakovich’s wracked genius.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2006, on Symphony No. 13
