2011 edition
the warmth and vitality of the playing has striking presence in this 1969 recording. The strings at the opening sweep one into the fun spirit of [the Simple Symphony] immediately...The performance [of the 'Guide'] is very fast...but the sheer adrenalin of the music-making is impossible to resist.
March 2014
Britten brings energy and warmth to his conducting – music-making that is really fun. The Young Person's Guide (recorded with the LSO in 1963) is performed without spoken narration, but the performance is so very characterful that Britten's direction and the players' vivid responses tell the whole story.
