In these works, Tchaikovsky blends Russian musical traditions with the grand European symphonic tradition. The repertoire ranges from the fairy-tale ballet music of The Nutcracker to the richly coloured Capriccio italiano and the lyrical Andante cantabile.

A varied programme with melodic richness, orchestral brilliance and that unmistakable emotional depth that makes Tchaikovsky’s music so popular to this day.

The Berliner Philharmoniker’s performances, conducted by Mstislav Rostropovich, are regarded as reference recordings.
