Benjamin Appl

Benjamin Appl (Baritone)

Born: 1982, Regensburg

Artist's website: http://benjaminappl.com/

The German baritone Benjamin Appl was born in Regensburg (where he was a cathedral chorister) in 1982 and worked in banking and business administration before pursuing a career as a singer; he trained at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and was mentored by the late Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He focuses primarily on lieder and oratorio: his debut solo album of Heine settings by Rubinstein, Schubert, Mendlessohn and Schumann with James Baillieu was released on Champs Hill in 2016, whilst he was still a BBC New Generation Artist, and was praised by Gramophone for his ‘natural appreciation of the essentials of singing Lieder’. Appl signed with Sony Classical later that year, and his first recording on the label, Heimat (again with Baillieu) was nominated for a Gramophone Award in 2017 and prompted BBC Music Magazine to describe him as ‘a singer of boundless promise, and already a great artist’; he was also awarded the ‘Prix Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau’ for the album by L’Académie du disque lyrique.
