Nationality: German
The German mezzo Iris Vermillion (born 1960) trained in Detmold and Hamburg, joining the Deutsche Opera Berlin in 1988 following a short apprenticeship at the Staatstheater Braunschweig. At the beginning of her career she focused on Mozart and baroque repertoire (including rarities by composers such as Hasse and Graun), but from the late 1990s onwards became increasingly in demand for Wagner, Strauss and Mahler; she sings Magdalene on Georg Solti’s Grammy-Award winning recording of Die Meistersinger (released shortly after his death), and more recently appeared as Fricka on Marek Janowski’s Pentatone Ring Cycle.
