Fedora Barbieri

Fedora Barbieri (Mezzo-Soprano)

Born: 4th June 1920, Trieste

Died: 4th March 2003, Florence

Nationality: Italian

Fedora Barbieri was born in Trieste in 1920 and made her La Scala debut in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony under Victor de Sabata in 1942; following a short sabbatical from singing in the mid-1940s, she first appeared at the Metropolitan Opera in 1950 as Eboli in Don Carlos, the beginning of a long association with the house which saw her notch up almost 100 performances over the course of her career.

She was particularly acclaimed in Verdi roles, many of which she performed and recorded opposite Maria Callas: she sings Amneris to the Greek soprano’s Aida on Tullio Serafin’s 1950 recording from La Scala, Azucena to her Leonora under Karajan, and Ulrica to her Amelia on Antonino Votto’s 1956 Ballo in maschera. She also had success in bel canto roles including Rosina Il barbiere di Siviglia and the title-role in Donizetti’s La Favorite.

Barbieri never officially retired, with late-career successes including Mamma Lucia in Franco Zeffirelli’s film of Cavalleria rusticana (opposite Placido Domingo’s Turiddu); aged 80, she reprised the role in 2000 to mark the sixtieth anniversary of her opera debut.
