The German pianist Alice Sara Ott was born in Munich in 1988 to a Japanese mother and a German father and began playing the piano aged four; by seven she was already performing well in competitions, and by twelve was a student at the Salzburg Mozarteum, going on to win prizes at the Hamamatsu International Piano Academy Competition and the Köthen Bach Competition. She signed to Deutsche Grammophon in 2008, making her debut on the label with a recording of Liszt’s Transcendental Études which attracted praise from BBC Music Magzine for her ‘quicksilver speed, agility, and accuracy’ and was described by Gramophone as ‘a significant achievement full of interest’. Subsequent recordings include the complete Chopin Waltzes, Beethoven’s Waldstein Sonata, Clara Schumann’s Romances Op. 22 with violinist Lisa Batiashvili, and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, all on Deutsche Grammophon.
