Evgeny Kissin

Evgeny Kissin (Piano)

Born: 10th October 1971, Moscow, Russian SFSR

Nationality: Russian

Artist's website: https://www.kissin.org/

Evgeny Kissin was born in Moscow in 1971 and began learning the piano at the age of six; he made his concerto debut at 10 and his recording debut at 12 (in the Chopin piano concertos with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra). By the late 1980s he was performing widely across Europe, and his debut at Carnegie Hall in 1990 (with a programme of Schumann, Liszt and Prokofiev) was recorded for RCA and hailed by Gramophone as ‘outstanding, confirming that what we have here is no mere Wunderkind but an established artist of the first order’.

Kissin’s discography includes a Grammy-winning recording of Prokofiev’s Piano Concertos No. 2 & 3 with Vladimir Ashkenazy and the Philharmonia Orchestra, the complete Beethoven piano concertos with the London Symphony Orchestra and Sir Colin Davis, a Carnegie Hall recital with James Levine, and Tchaikovsky and Scriabin concertos with the Berliner Philharmoniker and Herbert von Karajan (recorded just months before the great conductor’s death, whilst Kissin was still in his teens).

Kissin is also an active composer – his String Quartet was recorded by the Kopelman Quartet on Nimbus in 2018 – and has recorded recitals of Yiddish and Russian poetry. In 1997 he became the first pianist to give a solo recital at the BBC Proms, and awards and honours include the 2007 Arturo Benedetti award, the 2005 Herbert von Karajan Award, and honorary doctorates from the Manhattan School of Music and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
