Released at the end of June on Orchid Classics, Claire Booth and Christopher Glynn's new album Cocteau's Music offers a rich and varied showcase of some of the composers who were inspired by the work of the French playwright, poet, filmmaker and all-round Renaissance Man Jean Cocteau (1889-1963). Culminating with the rarely recorded voice-and-piano version of Poulenc's one-woman opera La voix humaine (inspired by Cocteau's 1930 play), the programme also includes songs by Milhaud, Honegger and Satie as well as several lesser-known French composers from the first half of the twentieth century.
Claire and Chris visited us in Leamington a few days before the album came out to perform songs by Poulenc, Maurice Delage and Georges Auric, and to discuss why Cocteau exerted such a strong creative influence on twentieth-century culture.
