Marc-André Hamelin's survey of William Bolcom's complete piano rags on Hyperion was our best-seller for last month - the album was one of our June Recordings of the Week , with David observing that 'Bolcom’s twenty-six rags run a gamut from exuberance to introspection, from humour to expressions of deep pain and grief…Hamelin responds perfectly to the changing shifts of mood and emotion in Bolcom’s multi-faceted exploration of the ragtime genre'. (He also had the pleasure of Marc's company on Zoom yesterday afternoon, so do look out for our interview with him about the project in the coming weeks...).
Other titles which proved popular including the world premiere of John Williams's Violin Concerto No. 2 with its dedicatee Anne-Sophie Mutter and the Boston Symphony Orchestra on Deutsche Grammophon, Britia-Italian tenor Freddie De Tommaso's album of Puccini and Bizet on Decca, Pavel Kolesnikov's selection of Hahn's Poèmes & Valses on Hyperion, and three Wranitzky symphonies from the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin & Bernhard Forck on Deutsche Harmonia Mundi.
