Obituary, 2019 Goodbyes

Jessye NormanA tribute to some of the musicians who died in 2019, including conductors André Previn, Stephen Cleobury and Mariss Jansons; composers Hans Zender, Giya Kancheli and Michel Legrand; and singers Marcello Giordani, Peter Schreier, and Jessye Norman.

The music is Strauss's Morgen!, sung by Jessye Norman. Her seamless legato and almost superhuman breath control are both on display in this recording from 1982, for which she is joined by the Gewandhausorchester and violinist Gerhard Bosse under conductor Kurt Masur.

James is a conductor, répétiteur, arranger, and tuba player. His musical interests include opera, film music, late-Romantic orchestral works (especially Mahler and Richard Strauss), and twentieth-century American composers such as Copland, John Adams, and John Williams. He read Music at Christ Church, Oxford, writing his postgraduate dissertation on the music of Star Wars.
