New Release Round-up, New Release Round-Up - 24th August 2018

New releases 24th August 2018Today’s new releases include Ravel, Debussy and Satie from Alice Sara Ott, two very different Debussy tributes on Harmonia Mundi, a thought-provoking and engaging debut album from American soprano Nadine Sierra, and Brahms’s Hungarian Dances from Cyprien Katsaris and Hélène Mercier.

Alice Sara Ott (piano)

As the title suggests, Ott’s album has a distinctly nocturnal (and Gallic) flavour, with Ravel’s Gaspard de la Nuit as the centrepiece; also includes Debussy’s Suite Bergamasque and Rêverie, Satie’s Trois Gymnopédies, and Ravel’s Pavane pour une infant défunte. Look out for our interview with her about the project over the coming weeks.

Available Formats: MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Sophie Karthäuser (soprano), Stéphane Degout, Eugene Asti (piano), Alain Planès (piano)

Two of today’s leading exponents of the title-roles in Pélleas et Mélisande joins forces with two outstanding mélodie pianists to mark the centenary of Debussy’s death; Karthäuser and Asti take the Trois chansons de Bilitis, Mandoline and the first set of Fêtes galantes, whilst the second set (plus the Trois Ballades de François Villon and the Trois chansons de France) are performed by Dégout and Planès.

Andre Schuen (baritone), Daniel Heide (piano)

The Tyrol-born baritone (who had a small role on Simon Rattle’s recording of Carmen in 2012, and made his solo recording debut three years ago with a recital of Schumann, Wolf & Frank Martin) explores the theme of wandering in an all-Schubert programme including An dem Mond, Der Fischer, Im Frühling, Im Abendrot, and of course Der Wanderer and Der Wanderer an den Mond.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Cyprien Katsaris, Hélène Mercier (piano)

Six years after their recording of the Brahms Sonata for Two Pianos (coupled with an arrangement of the Schumann Piano Quintet), Katsaris and Mercier share a piano-stool once more for the composer’s best-known work for piano four hands; Katsaris observes that ‘we tried never to lose sight of the improvisatory character symbolising the freedom of the Gypsies’.
