In a number of his works - for example in his comprehensive Mahler trilogy - the Hamburg musicologist Constantin Floros, with the help of selected examples, elucidated a number of questions pertaining to program music and its concrete references. This cross-cultural depiction of "Musik als Botschaft" (Music as Message) constitutes the quintessence of his decade-long research on the music of the 19th and 20th centuries.
