About

The window dedicated to the memory of Herbert Sumsion (1899 – 1995) in Gloucester Cathedral identifies him as ‘Composer and Cathedral Organist’. Most people know him as the latter who presided over The Three Choirs Festival when the likes of Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Finzi and Howells were among the festival’s active participants. For the most part his compositions manifest the collision of his Victorian and Edwardian impulses and few have been heard or recorded. This is therefore the first of two volumes to redress these omissions. Recorded on the organ of Salisbury Cathedral, this first volume is probably closer to the sound that Sumsion would have wished – the organ at Gloucester having now been substantially altered since his time there as organist. Daniel Cook, soon to be sub-organist at Westminster Abbey, is the player.
