This supremely stylish interpretation of the Op 23 Suite (1930) has much to commend it, occupying a satisfying middle ground between the Czech Trio's endearingly homely view and the far more grandly virtuoso approach espoused by Sony's starry team. Not for the first time on disc, William Howard's superior brand of pianism is a real boon, and the whole performance radiates an affection and gentle purposefulness that are genuinely appealing.
Korngoldians will surely want to acquire this ASV coupling for the marvellous Piano Quintet, which here receives a reading that marries refreshing spontaneity to notable architectural elegance. Dating from 1921 and composed just after Die tote Stadt, it's an exuberantly confident offering cast in three movements. These artists audibly revel in Korngold's taxing, yet sumptuously rewarding writing, and the recording is handsome and true.
