Welcome to our selection of new sheet music publications, which this month includes new piano publications from Henle Verlag, Camille Saint-Saëns's arrangement of Danse Macabre for two pianos, French songs and arias by Women Composers, choral works by John Adams, Ola Gjeilo, and Antonio Lotti, Grieg's complete works for violin and piano, Liebermann's Concerto for Violin, advanced scale studies for viola, Larry Carlton's Star Licks guitar series, Dynamic Guitar, new jazz resources from Sher Music, ABRSM's new drum kit syllabus books, and Bartok's String Quartet No. 5.
Piano, Keyboard, & Organ
One of Scriabin’s best-known piano pieces is also one of his very first compositions. He wrote it when he was only fifteen years old. The rapturous etude was soon to enjoy unprecedented success. In the Henle Urtext edition, Boris Giltburg’s fingerings support this task in an exemplary manner. As an etude of medium difficulty, this earworm offers a wonderful introduction to the piano world of Scriabin!

Part of a group of six piano sonatas which, according to Haydn’s own handwritten catalogue of works, was composed in 1776. The autograph has not survived, and the first edition of 1778 was not authorised. However, numerous copyist’s manuscripts have survived in which Haydn had his six sonatas disseminated.

Volume I of Liszt’s Années de pèlerinage, entitled Suisse, is based on impressions he gathered during an extended sojourn in Switzerland in 1835/36. The most important piece of the collection, first published in 1841, is undoubtedly Vallée d’Obermann, which offers a vast richness of melodic, harmonic and rhythmic variations on the basis of two contrasting themes.

The libretto of this opera was adapted by John Adams and Peter Sellars from a South Indian folktale and poems translated by A.K. Ramanujan. A Flowering Tree premiered in the Museums Quartier in Vienna in 2006.

Iam Sol Recedit and Lux Beata Trinitas were written as a pair, but can be performed separately as individual works. Along with the musical flow between the two and the instrumentation, they are linked through their texts.

Antonio Lotti was employed at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice for almost his entire life. In 1717, however, he was lured for two years to Dresden by the Saxon court as a composer of operas. A score of his Kyrie in G minor and his Gloria in G major, combined under the title Missa Sapientia, was found amongst the personal belongings of Dresden court composer Jan Dismas Zelenka. Carus is now publishing a vocal score of this work for the first time.

Ensemble
The longest and at the same time most complex of Bartók’s six string quartets was composed in the summer of 1934 as a well-paid commission for the renowned Elisabeth Sprague Coolidge Foundation in Washington. Bartók wrote it in a few weeks in Budapest. The substantially reworked autograph shows us how hard he laboured on the elaborate five-movement form.
