Mélancolie is one of the longest works Poulenc ever wrote for piano, and today can be counted among the composer’s best-known. In this piece, dedicated to Raymond Destouches, his companion at the time of whom he had no news because of the war, Poulenc’s melancholy takes on an air of nostalgia, a resignation that never reaches despair.

Commissioned by the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra and Chorus for a commemorative event in 2022, this work presents the composer's celebrated Passcaglia for string orchestra of 1995 in a new scoring for chorus and string orchestra or organ. Choirs of all sizes can now present this short but powerful musical statement in programmes of a general nature, and specifically those focussing on remembrance or peace.

This work was composed in 2020 and was commissioned by the Lord Burghley 500 Foundation for a Service of Thanksgiving in Westminster Abbey to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the birth of William Cecil, Lord Burghley. The text reflects on the themes of godly living, wisdom and a life of righteousness; the work is therefore suitable for a wide variety of uses, both general and across the church’s year.

A prolific and eclectic French composer, Darius Milhaud left us an output marked in particular by polytonality and the mixed influences of his native Provence, jazz, South American folk music and his Jewish origins. His complex musical language can also be found in Quatre Visages for viola (1943), in which Milhaud makes use of harmonics, complex rhythms, ornamentation, altering time signatures and clefs, double stops and a wide tessitura.
