New Publications, New Sheet Music Titles - January 9th

thumbWelcome to our selection of new sheet music publications, which this month includes Henle editions of piano works by Schönberg, Liszt, Beethoven, and Ravel; Gradebusters Grade 5; a collection of lieder by Schubert; Rautavaara's A Children's Mass; music from the motion picture Wish; Do-It-Yourself Bass Guitar; and Breitkopf & Härtel editions of Rachmaninoff and Mendelssohn orchestral works.

Piano, Keyboard, & Organ

In these works Schönberg refined the use of his twelve-tone technique and, regarding its formal structure, oriented himself around classical-romantic traditions. These two seldom-heard pieces in Schönberg’s mature style captivate by their colourful piano sound and organic dramatic arc. This edition includes helpful fingerings by Schönberg expert Shai Wosner.

These pieces, in simple dance and song forms, display remarkable refinement. The collection, which already appeared in innumerable editions during Beethoven’s lifetime, enjoys great popularity to the present day. For the new Henle Urtext edition, Beethoven expert Joanna Cobb-Biermann provides music and textual commentary incorporating the current state of research.

Franz Liszt was a Schubert fan his whole life. With this Urtext edition of Aufenthalt (Stopping Place), Henle starts a series of individual editions of these fascinating testimonials to Liszt’s enthusiasm for Schubert. For this purpose, editor Andrea Lindmayr-Brandl has sifted through the surviving editions; and fingerings are provided by no less than Evgeny Kissin, who also assisted in the choice of pieces.

Henle Verlag | Two Pianos

Alongside manuscripts and prints, a recording made under Ravel’s supervision by the work’s dedicatee, Marguerite Long, was consulted for this Henle Urtext edition. Since its successful premiere in January 1932 the concerto has been part of the repertoire of all great pianists, including Pascal Rogé, the French music expert who has provided the fingerings for the solo part.

Volume 10 of the new Urtext edition of Schubert’s lieder contains works composed between September 1816 and August 1817. Above all, the collaboration with his friend, the poet Johann Mayrhofer, was decisive for Schubert’s development as a lieder composer in these months.

Fennica Gehrman | Set of Parts | Children's Choir and String Orchestra

The seven movements of A Children's Mass by Einojuhani Rautavaara are performed in alternation by a children's choir and string orchestra. Only in the final movement are the two ensembles combined. Chamber & Orchestral

Large lines, catchy melodies and romantic sounds characterize Rachmaninoff’s legendary Second Piano Concerto. The present first Urtext edition, created in cooperation with the G. Henle Verlag, takes into account the autograph score, as well as recordings with the composer at the piano. The informative texts shed light on the process of creation and the context in Rachmaninoff’s oeuvre.

The Overture to Ruy Blas, was Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s last overture. The work’s special history, including several arrangements occasioned by various performances, led to the fact that the overture had its largest circulation in the version of the posthumous first edition on which this edition is also based.

Available Format: Sheet Music

Breitkopf & Härtel | Full Score

Four of Mendelssohn's overtures were printed during his lifetime, and others were extant in manuscript, though frequently and successfully performed by the composer. Belonging to the latter group is the “Trumpet Overture,” begun in 1825 and performed three times between 1828 and 1833 on prominent occasions in Berlin, Düsseldorf, and London.
