Film & Television, Chris Siddall Music publications now available at Presto!

We are delighted to announce that we are now able to offer for sale the series of full orchestral film scores published by Chris Siddall Music. Founded in 2020, Chris Siddall Music Publishing specialises in bringing authentic film scores to print - utilising original recording materials including the composer's handwritten sketches, full score manuscripts and player parts (which have often sat dormant in a studio archive since the conclusion of the recording session), every detail is captured and presented in a beautifully laid out and durable edition. An invaluable resource for any aspiring composer or orchestrator, Chris Siddall Music is proud to present these fantastic scores for the enjoyment and study of all film music fans.

So far their range of publications includes scores by Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner, David Arnold, Basil Poledouris, and Michael Kamen. Their most recent publication is the full orchestral score for James Horner's The Rocketeer. See below for details of selected titles, or you can browse their full range of publications here.

The Rocketeer - James Horner

RocketeerReuniting with director Joe Johnston, following 1989’s Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, James Horner finally achieved his goal of scoring a motion picture about flying. Until 1991’s The Rocketeer, Horner had always managed to “miss out” on projects relating to his passion for flight. The Rocketeer presented the perfect vehicle for him, and the resulting score is one of the finest he ever wrote. Bristling with energy and exuberance, the score is almost Wagnerian in its use of motifs.

As well as the orchestral score featuring exquisite orchestrations by John Neufeld, Elliot Kaplan and Conrad Pope, this edition also includes the unique opportunity to study five jazz standards which were specially arranged and orchestrated for The Rocketeer by the legendary Billy May.

Released in 1979, Alien was director Ridley Scott’s second feature film. Jerry Goldsmith's score is infamous partly for the fact that so much of it was not included in the movie at all, or was edited and not used in the way the composer intended. His original vision ranges from lush romanticism to terrifying dissonance. Employing unusual instruments such as conch shell, serpent, didgeridoo and shawm, and using extended playing techniques across the orchestra, Jerry’s score is a treasure trove of ideas.

Aliens was the score for which James Horner received his first Oscar nomination. Surprising perhaps, given that barely any of the score exists intact in the final edit of the movie, and it infamously put great strain on the working relationship between Horner and director James Cameron. This book presents each cue as it was originally intended. For the first time, enjoy being able to study the extended note ranges, techniques and effects which Horner employed to create this iconic piece of film music history.

By the time of Gremlins in 1984, Jerry Goldsmith was deep into his experimentation with analogue synthesisers; his combination of electronics and traditional instruments works well at creating a subversively silly tone to match the on-screen chaos. The score reads like a “who’s who” of classic 80s synths, including (amongst others) Roland’s Jupiter-6, a Memorymoog, a pair of Yamaha DX7s and a trio of Oberheims. Rather than being pre-recorded, these were amplified and played live with the 80-piece orchestra.

In 1994, director Roland Emmerich, producer Dean Devlin and composer David Arnold put themselves on the Hollywood map with Stargate. Their next outing together, 1996's Independence Day dominated the worldwide box office. The score is perhaps best remembered for its rousing, patriotic bombast, however there is beauty and introspection in the quieter cues which should not be overlooked. Presented here for the first time in full score, composer David Arnold and orchestrator Nicholas Dodd's epic, Grammy-winning score is one not to be missed!
