Funk & Soul

Funk & Soul

Jazz has long been informed by popular styles of the time, and it was no different when artists began incorporating elements of soul, and later funk music, into their compositions. Soul jazz emerged in the late 1950s and is often characterised by the usage of Hammond organ in jazz trios and small combos, predating the development of electric instrument-heavy genres like jazz fusion. Developing later in the 1970s, jazz-funk similarly incorporated funk music’s strong back-beat and electric sounds, particularly early analog synthesisers and electric guitars. Jazz-funk in particular was a controversial movement that on occasion eschewed the more improvised elements of jazz in favour of more danceable songs.
