Smooth Jazz
Smooth jazz is a style of commercially-oriented jazz music that draws heavily from rhythm and blues, soul, and easy listening, originating in the 1970s. The style starkly contrasted with the wilder sounds of jazz fusion at the time, with smooth jazz artists including Grover Washington Jr., Bill Withers, and later on, of course, saxophonist Kenny G. Routinely the subject of ridicule by jazz purists, smooth jazz often has far more commercial success, and can be a good way of gently introducing new listeners to jazz before they delve into Coltrane's Ascension.
