The latest jazz recordings released this week include a previously unheard Montreux Jazz Festival recording from Donald Byrd, music from the Ron Carter documentary, various Ezzthetics re-issues and a new solo album by multi-instrumentalist Leland Whitty.

Several similarly-titled live recordings came from the 1973 Montreux Jazz Festival, from Bobby Hutcherson, Ronnie Foster, Bobbi Humphrey, and Marlena Shaw, but this Donald Byrd recording from the same date has remained in the archives until this year. Releasing on what would've been Byrd's 90th birthday, his Montreux set sees the trumpeter fresh off recording his fusion record Black Byrd.

The soundtrack to PBS' 'Finding the Right Notes', the two-hour documentary on jazz legend Ron Carter, including a live set from the New Port Jazz Festival of his classic tune 'Soft Winds', as well as a bass duet with Christian McBride of 'Willow Weep for Me' and two tunes recorded at the Blue Note club in New York with Bill Frisell.

Leland Whitty

Anyhow is the new album from multi-instrumentalist Leland Whitty, best known for his work as (primarily) a saxophonist in BADBADNOTGOOD. Inspired by other multi-instrumentalists in history like Prince and Paul McCartney, Anyhow features Whitty on guitar, synthesizer, woodwinds, production, composition and strings, imbuing his compositions with both songwriter-like structure and jazz-like improv.

This new Ezzthetics issue includes cuts from Miles Davis' final Prestige Records session, in which he produced a string of albums to fulfil his contractual obligations - Cookin', Relaxin', Workin', and Steamin' with the Miles Davis Quintet.

This Paul Bley retrospective chronicles a period where Bley's idiosyncratic originals, characterised by chordless improvisatory passages and complex counterpoint, were steadily replaced in his trio by the music of his new partner Annette Peacock.

Available Format: CD

This final Ezzthetics reissue collects pieces from Archie Shepp's late-60s period, drawing comparisons to Black spirituals, blues, free jazz and 'fire music' in equal measure.
