New Release Round-up, Jazz New Release Round-Up - 17th March 2022

Brad Mehldau
Pictured: Brad Mehldau

The latest jazz releases include the prog rock-influenced Jacob's Ladder by Brad Mehldau, Norwegian guitar trio Boarding Completed, the debut of Dutch jazz vocalist Jessica de Boer, and the first authorised biography of American guitarist Bill Frisell.

Brad Mehldau

Pianist Brad Mehldau's latest body of work is the prog-infused Jacob's Ladder, complete with a cover of Rush's classic track 'Tom Sawyer'. Harkening back to Mehldau's first musical love - it was bands like Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Gentle Giant that got his attention before jazz - the record even covers material from more recent prog acts like Periphery's 'Racecar'.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Anders Koppel, Benjamin Koppel, Scott Colley, Brian Blade, Martin Yates & Odense Symphony Orchestra

A seven-part suite for symphony orchestra fronted by three jazz musicians (in this case saxophonist Benjamin Koppel, bassist Scott Colley, and drummer Brian Blade), Anders Koppel's 'Mulberry Street Symphony' is inspired by the photographs of immigrants in 1880s New York by Jacob Riis.

Available Format: CD

Boarding Completed

Boarding Completed began life as Norwegians Bård Helgerud, Andreas Dreier, and Magnus Sefaniassen Eide's guitar trio playing songbook standards, but the material on Park Blues is all written by guitarist Helgerud, whose work is influenced by everything from '50s bebop to '90s grunge. Three of the tracks also feature guest vocals by Live Foyn Friis.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

Brew 4tet

Another new release from Losen Records is the Brew 4tet's latest album Drops, which makes for some timbrally curious jazz from this sax, vibes, bass and drums quartet.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC

Jessica de Boer

Grow is the debut album of Dutch jazz vocalist Jessica de Boer, and consists entirely of her own compositions rich with harmony and colour.

Available Formats: CD, MP3, FLAC, Hi-Res FLAC

This Essential Jazz Classics reissue features Duke Ellington in a rare setting - playing music outside of his own songbook or that of close collaborator Billy Strayhorn - playing the music from Richard & Robert Sherman's 'Mary Poppins' score, as well as his own Afro-Bossa work released at the height of the bossa nova jazz craze.
