The music of Gustav Mahler, the Late Romantic composer on the threshold of modernity, has been a firm part of the repertoire of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks ever since the early 1960s, when the orchestra's Mahler tradition was established by its former chief conductor Rafael Kubelík.

The 2007 recording that has now been re-issued by BR-KLASSIK of Mahler’s First Symphony, with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks under its chief conductor Mariss Jansons, can be regarded as a CD premiere – in that this recording has only so far been available as a bonus CD forming part of the audio biography of Gustav Mahler “World and Dream” (BR-KLASSIK 900901).

This new release is thus aimed primarily at listeners eager to experience Mahler’s First Symphony under Mariss Jansons who would prefer to purchase the orchestral work separately from the audio biography.

The recorded sound has great presence and conveys vividly the orchestra’s virtuosic playing. The RCO version doesn’t fall back on either ground, so this new release is preferable largely for Jansons’s heightened interpretation.

Awards Issue 2019

The broad outlines of the performance are near-identical to previously issued Jansons accounts from Oslo and Amsterdam…There is a Bavarian solidity to the rough Landler rhythms of the Scherzo, and the slow movement’s night processional…is beautifully rendered in subdued timbres, and Jansons judges to perfection the ‘Jewish’ interventions of the village band.

There is some breathtakingly glorious music here that in the hands of Jansons seems to suggest love and passion.
