'Though best-known as one of the greatest British composers to have lived, Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) was also highly respected as a conductor of his own works and those of others (particularly baroque and early twentieth-century English composers) – in 1952 he was offered the position of musical director at the Royal Opera Covent Garden, but turned it down in favour of concentrating on composition.
