Nationality: Russian

The Russian coloratura soprano Albina Shagimuratova was born in Tashkent in 1979 and studied at the Kazan Music College in Tatarstan and the Moscow conservatory before taking up a place on the young artists’ program at Houston Grand Opera. In 2007 she won the gold medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition and shortly afterwards appeared at the Salzburg Festival as Queen of the night under Riccardo Muti; she has gone on to sing the role at many of the world’s major houses, including La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, the Bolshoi, Covent Garden and the Vienna State Opera. Her repertoire also includes Donizetti’s Lucia (which she sang at The Met in 2015), Mozart’s Donna Anna and Konstanze, Verdi’s Gilda and Violetta, and the title-role in Rossini’s Semiramide, which she performed to great acclaim at the BBC Proms in 2016 (‘her combination of stage presence, vocal pyrotechnics and expressive abandon made Rossini’s fluent lyricism electrifying ‘ – Opera Today) and recorded for Opera Rara under Sir Mark Elder.
