Sabine Devieilhe (Soprano)

Nationality: French

Sabine Devieilhe was born in Normandy in 1985 and studied at the Caen Conservatory, Rennes University and the Conservatoire de Paris, where she studied the cello and musicology alongside singing. She worked with leading French baroque ensembles including Pygmalion, Le Concert Spirituel, Les Musiciens du Louvre, Les Arts Florissants and Le Concert d’Astrée whilst still a student, and made her bel canto debut as Amina in Bellini’s La sonnambula in 2012. She excels in coloratura roles such as Mozart’s Queen of the Night (with which she made her Royal Opera House debut in 2017), Lakmé, Marie in Donizetti’s La fille du régiment, and Zerbinetta in Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos.

• Devieilhe is a Warner Classics and Erato artist; recordings for the label include Rameau: Le Grand Theatre de l’Amour (‘Devieilhe’s voice is beautifully clear and full, cultured but young and natural, lyrical and agile’ – Opera Now), Mirages (a collection of nineteenth-century operatic arias and songs exploring the concept of exoticism, described as a ‘refreshing, fascinating and beguiling album [which] is impossible to resist’ by Gramophone, Ismene in a 2017 DVD of Mozart’s Mitridate from the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, and Bellezza in Handel’s Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno from the Aix-en-Provence festival in 2016.

Prizes and honours include Artist of the Year at the CLASSICA ‘Choc’ Awards in 2017, a Grammy nomination and the Recital prize at the 2016 Gramophone Awards for Mozart: The Weber Sisters (‘a pure, sweet timbre and dazzling virtuosity’), and Victoire Artiste Lyrique de l’Année 2018.
