Polish baritone Tomasz Konieczny was born in Łódź in 1972, and began his working life as an actor and director; he studied voice with the German tenor Christian Elsner in Dresden, and made his professional operatic debut as Mozart’s Figaro in 1997. In the early part of his singing career he sang bass roles including Wagner’s King Marke, Verdi’s Procida and Grand Inquisitor and Mozart’s Sarastro, but has since transitioned into dramatic bass-baritone roles including Jack Rance in La fanciulla del West (available on DVD and blu-ray, also starring Nina Stemme and Jonas Kaufmann), Telramund on Christian Thielemann’s Lohengrin from the Dresdner Semperoper, Alberich on Simon Rattle’s Das Rheingold with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and Wotan/The Wanderer on Marek Janowski’s Pentatone Ring Cycle (opposite his former teacher Elsner’s Loge).
