Coming Soon, Vivaldi's Il Pesce d'Aprile

Vivaldi's Il Pesce d'AprileA long-lost masterpiece by Vivaldi is set to win new audiences for baroque opera when it appears on disc next year. Musicologists Giacomo Langobastone and Caterina Coprario discovered the manuscript of Il Pesce d'Aprile (thought to date from the mid-1710s) in the basement of a small trattoria just outside Venice in late 2013; the opera, detailing the amorous intrigues of the flamboyant Donna Pazza, includes the well-known arias 'Visetto di Poker' and 'Bella, sporca, ricca' (both previously misattributed to more recent composers). Full casting-details are yet to be announced, but it's rumoured that Pazza will be sung by Italian diva Stefani Germanotta, with Placido Domingo assuming his first female role as her nurse Vecchia (originally written for the soprano castrato Stracciatelli). We're currently awaiting confirmation of release-date and label but fingers crossed that Naive Records will pick it up for their ongoing Vivaldi series!

Ottone in Villa was first full opera recording ever done by leading Baroque music specialist Il Giardino Armonico and its music director Giovanni Antonini. The recording won plaudits for its 'energy and virtuosity' (Classic FM Magazine) and the 'rounded vocal timbre and powerful declamation' of Sonia Prina in the title-role (BBC Music Magazine).
