Regarded as missing for a long time, Gideon Klein's (1919-45) Opus 1 was not rediscovered until in 1990, together with other works from the time before his internment in Terezin. The songs were created in the early summer of 1940 and are based on texts by Hölderlin, Goethe, and the German baroque poet Johann Klaj. Intensified by the unusual tempo order of slow-fast-slow and written in an atonal, contrapuntal style typical of Klein, they possess a melancholic nostalgic nature. The composer revised the vocal part of the first two songs, presumably after consultation with a singer. The present new edition contains both versions, the original one and the simplified one.
