In the spring of 1876, in a belated response to the death of his young daughter Josefa on 21 September 1875, Dvorak wrote out a virtually complete piano score of seven movements from his sacred cantata, Stabat Mater. Being busy with other commissions, he was unable to finish the work at the time. Not until 1877, when his two other children Ruzena and Otakar died in quick succession, did the now childless composer return to the cantata, sketching out its three remaining numbers in piano score (now nos. 5–7) and orchestrating the entire magnificent edifice.
The original piano version has never been published and has remained in a private collection to the present day.
Although Dvorak never brought it to performance level, it is basically identical to the well known definitive orchestral version and has served the editors as the basis of their new vocal score.
It has been revised in comparison with the final orchestral version, supplied with vocal parts from the complete edition and rounded off with a short essay.
- An amazingly simple piano part with a surprisingly rich array of colours
