Breitkopf & Härtel | Piano

The Lyric Pieces for Piano op. 74 were written at the suggestion of the publishing house Breitkopf & Härtel, for whom Jean Sibelius was to compose five piano pieces. Sibelius was allowed to send the pieces individually as they were completed, but by July 1914, only four pieces had been finalized. Thus, opus 74 was published in December 1914 without the fifth piece.

In order to publish the work in the form the composer had in mind, the edition had to draw upon the three main authentic components: Weber’s autograph, the first revised and reliable full-score edition of 1867 – and, especially for the dialogue passages, Weber’s personal libretto exemplar, containing extremely telling deletions and additions.
