Le Carnaval des animaux was conceived in a small Austrian village, while Camille Saint-Saëns was working on his third Symphony with organ, opus 78. Afraid that this humoristic fantasy could cause his oeuvre to be taken less seriously and harm his reputation, he forbade its being published during his lifetime.

Paul Bonneau was considered by all his contemporaries to be the leading composer of French light symphonic music: he collaborated on fifty full-length films in addition to numerous shorts as either composer or orchestrator and composed scores for ballets and operettas. He wrote a number of pieces for saxophone which are still regarded around the world as standard reference works.

Sergei Rachmaninoff’s chamber music for violoncello and piano comprises three works, all of which originate from his early compositional period and whose genesis is closely linked to people in his circle at the time. For this edition, editor Daniela Macchione draws on the first editions published in collaboration with Rachmaninoff as well as the relevant autographs.

The Serenade in C K648 ‘Ganz kleine Nachtmusik’ for two violins and basso (‘cello’) is a previously unknown piece by Mozart that was discovered by researchers in Leipzig, Germany, and included in the 2024 edition of the Köchel catalogue. Thought to have been composed when he was in his teens, the piece consists of seven movements for string trio, lasting around 12 minutes.

The serenade flourished in Mozart’s era, but with Brahms the genre experienced a new surge in popularity in the 19th century. Dvořák’s cheerful and relaxed op. 22 came into being in 1875, during a very happy time for him both professionally and privately. He put his personal stamp on the five-movement composition by incorporating stylized Slavonic dances.
