Musica Rara - 25% off
Musica Rara was founded in London in 1950. The publisher's program soon took on a clear profile with wind literature of the 17th - 19th centuries: an area which was under-represented by publishers until then. Breitkopf & Härtel acquired the publishing house in 2000, and continues the Musica Rara program through improved reprints and new editions. Until the end of March we are offering 25% off hundreds of titles in the Musica Rara catalogue.

Sibelius was a major force in the Finnish national movement and many of his works were inspired by the music and the culture of his homeland. In this transcription, arranger Andrew Middleton aimed to use the instrumental timbres in a way that retains the original patriotic qualities but within a smaller ensemble.

In this arrangement of the Bolero, Christian Beyer dares something that would certainly have led most arrangers to throw up their hands in despair. The result is striking: a version (stylish and sensibly cut) of the well-known masterpiece, which, through clever instrumentation, totally exploits the wind quintet’s timbres and tonal possibilities.

In his flute sonatas, the royal composer Frederick the Great can lay uncontested claim to an above-average talent. The works stand out for their imaginative power, their skill and their stylistic variety. The grand rooms of Sanssouci Palace must have been filled with heartfelt Adagios and brilliant Allegros that confirmed the virtuoso flute technique of the Quantz pupil.

There is no doubt that this beautiful variation theme is by Rossini; it comes from his melodrama La donna del lago. But is the Italian opera genius responsible for more than the melody in this piece, which is found in the repertoire of many clarinetists? The only printed source is a set of parts published by Breitkopf & Härtel in 1823. Although it ascribes the entire piece to Rossini, the experts are not fully convinced. Nevertheless: the variations are perfectly idiomatic for the instrument, and are both lyrical and virtuoso.

Tosca was first performed in Rome, at the Teatro Costanzi, on 14 January 1900. Based on a play by Vincent Sardou, the libretto unfolds in an effective rhetoric that is both direct and decidedly dramatic. The characters and the action seem embossed with touches of polished emotional pliancy, reinforced by the orchestration and vocal style of the music. But the music is also responsible for the more subtle, indirect psychological shading to this context of basic contrasts.

Among the most popular and important modern British composers, Gustav Holst (1874–1934) was a true eccentric, given to odd enthusiasms and mystical musings.
