Vocal Score

On 17th November 1868, Verdi made a proposal to Tito Ricordi to form a commission to select thirteen of the most representative composers of the era, asking each of them to compose a movement of the mass to be performed on the first anniversary of the death of Rossini. The manuscript lay largely forgotten in the archives of Casa Ricordi until 1970, when it caught the attention of the musicologist David Rosen.

The principal source for this edition is the printed score prepared by the Parisian publisher Georges Schonenberger during the spring of 1840. However, the engravers had to work under great pressure, and the final product turned out to be full of imperfections, errors, and inconsistencies. This critical edition has therefore been realised through a careful reconstruction process. It also reinstates Tonio’s Act Two romance, Pour me rapprocher de Marie, sung at the première but expunged from the Schonenberger edition.

Here, appearing for the first time, is the vocal score of Le Willis, the original one-act version of Puccini’s first stage work Le Villi. Transcription of the Second Symphony

Schütz set verses from the Song of Solomon; here, a high voice choir of four sopranos sings the words of Shulamite, and a three-part low voice choir represents the “Daughters of Jerusalem”; the two join together only at the end of the piece.
