The Complete Chopin – A New Critical Edition from Edition Peters is firmly established as the most important ongoing scholarly edition of Chopin’s music. Now available is Roy Howat’s edition of the Trois Nouvelles Études, based on Chopin’s autograph, and correcting important pitches that were wrongly presented in previous editions. Alongside Chopin’s authentic fingerings, and variants presented as ossias within the main text of each Étude, it includes a preface and thorough critical commentary.

Wiener Urtext

In addition to sonatas and variations, Beethoven also left behind a considerable number of individual piano pieces, from larger works such as Die Wuth über den verlornen Groschen to the witty miniatures of the Bagatelles. This new edition includes important works such as the Rondos (WoO 48 and 49) from 1784 and pieces that have so far gone largely unnoticed, such as the Allegretto in C minor WoO 214. It also includes the Ländlerischer Tanz, newly discovered and published separately in 2020.

Never published before, this Valse has a fascinating history. Written in December 1951, the work exists in the form of a facsimile of an autograph manuscript, incorporated into a drawing by the painter Richard Chanlaire, this drawing itself the motif of a scarf (or silk square) created by the haute couture designer Pierre Balmain. Admittedly modest in size, this Valse is a work full of charm.

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was paid three guineas for the publishing rights to his Suite de Pièces by Schott & Co. London in 1892, when the composer was just seventeen years old. Although Milhaud composed more than 450 pieces, works for guitar occupy only a marginal place within his oeuvre, with one short composition, written in 1957, entitled Segoviana, dedicated to the great Andalusian guitarist Andrés Segovia. This new publication, edited by Frédéric Zigante, differs from the first one of 1959 with a layout that makes reading easier and the addition of fingering indications.

Vocal, Choral, & Opera

Bärenreiter has published a new edition of Gounod’s masterpiece in which the ageing Faust makes a pact with the devil to preserve his youth in exchange for his soul. Presented here is the vocal score of the five-act version (with recitatives rather than spoken dialogue), including sung texts in French and German and a practical, playable piano reduction.

With a text by John Henry Newman, Lead, kindly Light is a short, moving piece for SATB unaccompanied choir, perfectly suited for our current times. Step-like movement in the melody reflects the speaker seeking light in the darkness, slow but steady in their way out of the 'encircling gloom'.

In this passionate four-movement work for SATB and piano, composer Bob Chilcott and lyricist Delphine Chalmers explore themes of inclusivity, identity, and unity. Songs my Heart has Taught Me brings singers and audience together in a celebration of all that unites us.

The fourteen items in this volume constitute the earlier part of Purcell's output of continuo verse anthems, spanning the years 1675 to 1685, including pieces such as Turn thou us, O Good Lord, O Lord our Governor, Give sentence with me, O God, Hear my prayer, O God, and Out of the deep.

The hymn from Sibelius's Finlandia became the unofficial national anthem of Finland. Sibelius had already written an arrangement of the hymn for male choir on a different text in 1938, but after a suggestion by his publisher Roger Lindberg, he decided to write a version for mixed choir using words by Veikko Antero Koskenniemi. This edition includes both the original version in F major as well as a second version in A flat major.

Orchestral

In October 1944, Richard Strauss produced a second fair copy of his tone poem Till Eulenspiegel, which he instructed should be regarded as a "new print", containing hundreds of precisely-defined indications for articulation, dynamics and tempo, as well as an altered scoring at the end of the work (waiving the additional horns and trumpets). Breitkopf now presents this final version for the first time.

Available Format: Sheet Music

Breitkopf's edition, reproduced from the new Beethoven Complete Edition, re-evaluates the complicated source situation, using as the main sources only the autograph and the parts from the premiere. It reveals a number of writing errors and misunderstandings in the copying of the parts, leading to changes from previous editions, particularly concerning numerous markings of dynamics and articulation.
