New Sheet Music November 2020Welcome to our selection of new sheet music publications, which this month includes piano transcriptions of some of John Rutter's most popular Christmas music; a new edition of Bartók's piano pieces, For Children; easy piano arrangements of Christmas carols from Edition Peters; a synoptic facsimile edition of Bach's Cello Suites; chamber music by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Ravel, and Martinů; a deluxe facsimile edition of Wagner's final opera, Parsifal; and orchestral scores of works by Dukas, Richard Strauss, and Dvořák.

Piano

Oxford University Press

Designed for pianists at early intermediate level, this book brings together eight of the composer's best-loved seasonal choral pieces as piano transcriptions, made by Rutter himself, for performance or enjoyment at home. Clearly presented and laid out, the transcriptions also include the text within the piano score, for reference or potential sing-alongs. From the composer who has become synonymous with Christmas, this versatile collection is a joyous celebration of the season.

Mozart’s sonata, with its famous Alla Turca finale, is one of the most popular works in the piano literature. After a section of the lost autograph was rediscovered a few years ago, another important source has surfaced with the appearance of a previously unknown contemporary copy of the complete autograph, which has prompted Bärenreiter to issue an up-to-date Urtext edition of this celebrated piece.

Bartók composed his pedagogical collection For Children between 1908 and 1911. After moving to America, he considered it important to produce new editions of his earlier works, and to this end completely revised the collection. This edition is based on the revised version made in 1943. Pieces discarded from the revised version, as well as early versions that are significantly different, are included in the appendix.

Instrumental & Chamber Music

Considering their significance, the great number of editions of Bach's Cello Suites in existence is not surprising. However, the composer’s autograph is considered lost. The four autograph sources still in existence and the first print from 1824 show numerous small deviations, especially in terms of articulation markings and phrasing. This facsimile edition is the first to juxtapose all four autograph sources as well as the first print.

Breitkopf & Härtel continue their Originals series, opening up a fascinating view into their archives by reprinting original editions of selected pieces. This publication extends their range of Beethoven's String Quartets, offering a fresh look at nineteenth-century reception history, with parts including fingerings and bowing marks by editor Engelbert Röntgen.

In view of Mendelssohn’s obsession with revising his works, the quintets pose some challenges to the editor: in the 1833 version of the A major quintet he replaced an inner movement and switched the order of the movements from the early version, while the B flat major quintet underwent several rounds of revision. This set of parts includes both the early version and the published version of the A major quintet.

Although the study score of Martinů's Serenade No. 1 was published while the composer was still alive, he was in fact not involved in preparing that edition; indeed, the performance material also appeared in print without his participation in 1954. For this new edition, therefore, Bärenreiter decided to use the autograph score as the principal source.

In this arrangement Christian Beyer offers a stylish and sensibly-cut version of Ravel's well-known masterpiece, which, through clever instrumentation, fully exploits the wind quintet’s timbres and tonal possibilities. The ostinato by the snare drum can be added ad libitum.

Choral & Opera

The fourth volume of Breitkopf's Choir Library collects works that do not directly correspond to times during the church year, roughly divided by genre: motets, solemn sacred music, Marian hymns, and sacred songs. The Marian hymns range from Palestrina via Liszt to Reger, while the sacred songs mostly contain compositions by Schubert and Rudolf Mauersberger.

Wagner wrote the autograph score of Parsifal almost entirely in violet ink, a colour he preferred to use in the final years of his life. As the printed score was not yet finished for the premiere on 26th July 1882, this carefully-written autograph lay on the conductor’s desk in its stead. Bärenreiter's sumptuous facsimile edition in high-quality four-colour printing reproduces the extensive score in its original size.

Orchestral

Paul Dukas called his best-known orchestral work “Scherzo after a Ballade by Goethe.” The colourful orchestration draws the listener down into the depths of Goethe’s ballade: a tale of obedience and disobedience, of attempts at concealment, of destruction, but also of benevolence, clemency, and wisdom. This new edition is based on the pocket-score edition edited by Jean-Paul C. Montagnier.

The first edition of Strauss's Oboe Concerto did not appear until 1948 in London, presumably mostly without the composer’s involvement, for both the printed score and the orchestral parts exhibit numerous errors. Some of these have been known for a while, though others have only been discovered and corrected for this edition by oboist Hansjörg Schellenberger, now available as a full orchestral score.

For a long time, the performance material for Dvořák's Symphony No. 8 work has been notorious for its myriad mistakes. For his new edition, Jonathan Del Mar was therefore faced with the task of making comprehensive corrections. He has taken into account the engraver’s copy, which was actually discovered in a bin at Novello’s in 1964. This source proves that many of the readings contained in the first edition, and faithfully adopted in subsequent editions, were simply slips of the copyist’s pen.
