Beethoven's three sonatas from his days in Bonn, published in 1783, do not have an opus number and therefore do not appear in the canon of thirty-two sonatas. However, these demanding early works are not to be underestimated. The first of J S Bach's Keyboard Concertos is perhaps the most popular – not least because of its jaunty outer movements and the eminently forceful solo part. In the first volume of a series of all of these concertos, Henle presents a reduction for two keyboards of this first concerto. András Schiff, the outstanding Bach expert, has provided fingering suggestions.

Written over a period of three years, the compositional process of this piece spawned two independent versions, the earlier of which is now published for the first time. There are enormous differences between the two: Strauss deleted the entire second and third movements (Larghetto and Allegro vivace), replacing them with a newly-composed Andante and Finale.

When Beethoven wrote these three quartets he was fifteen years old and a composition student in Bonn. The sole source is the autograph score which contains many overwritings that reveal possible alternative readings. Bärenreiter’s scholarly edition not only presents the correct readings, it also sheds light on the young Beethoven’s expressive notation and provides a plausible explanation for the distinction he made between dots and strokes to indicate staccato.

Woodwind & Brass

The first edition of Strauss's Oboe Concerto did not appear until 1948 in London, presumably mostly without the composer’s involvement, for both the printed score and the orchestral parts exhibit numerous errors. Some of these have been known for a while, though others have only been discovered and corrected for this edition by oboist Hansjörg Schellenberger.

Beethoven wrote his Horn Sonata op. 17 for Johann Wenzel, one of the most famous horn players of his day. As the horn part demands a masterly technique, the publisher of the first print in 1801 included an alternative part for cello. Since the autograph score has not survived, Jonathan Del Mar has based his scholarly-critical edition mainly on this first print.

In the summer of 1888, Strauss composed this brief Andante for his father, Franz Strauss. For this new Henle Urtext edition, the original autograph manuscript held at the Munich Public Library was able to be examined directly.

Alongside the meticulously-edited musical text, he also delves into questions of performance practice that previous critical editions have overlooked.
