The oratorio A Child of Our Time was Tippett's artistic and emotional response to the events that led to the 'Kristallnacht' pogrom of November 1938. For his oratorio Tippett used as his formal and historical models the Bach Passions and Handel's Messiah which share with this contemporary morality the subject of the death of an individual set against the universal background of human suffering.

This masterpiece, composed by Erich Wolfgang Korngold when he was only 23, was one of the great stage successes of the 1920s and 30s before being removed from theatre schedules by the National Socialists. Rediscovered in the 1970s, it has enjoyed continuing popularity ever since. A variety of operatic devices are intermingled as if viewed through a kaleidoscope: opulent melodic arias, advanced harmonies, psychoanalytic profundity and cinematic transitions oscillating between reality and dream worlds guarantee the continuing modernity of this work up to the present day.

With the symphonic poem Fontane di Roma, Respighi began the so-called 'Roman Trilogy', taking up a wide-spread subject in the fields of literature and music. Since the French harpsichordists, waterworks have always been the subject of programmatic music, and even the poetry of the 'seicento' already dealt with the Roman fountains. Respighi's setting, however, is not just an onomatopoeic representation of waterworks. As is explained by Respighi in his specially attached programme, the music captures moods and pictures that are generated within the viewer while looking at the fountains.

Carmen is one of the most popular and most frequently performed operas across the globe. Its world premiere was a flop. Nevertheless, the opera very quickly gained acceptance at all major theatres, bringing in its wake countless arrangements of some particularly beautiful music numbers, among them the Carmen Fantasia for violin and orchestra by the Spanish violin virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate. It was, in all probability, Bizet's close friend and fellow student Ernest Guiraud who brought twelve numbers of the opera together to form two orchestral suites. The missing singing voices were replaced by instruments, as was common practice in such cases.
