Singing Sherlock

Singing Sherlock is the acclaimed, practical and easy-to-use resource for classroom teachers, specialist music teachers, and children’s choir directors. Each volume is packed full of enjoyable songs and fun vocal activities designed to equip and enable children to sing to their full potential, and is presented in clear, progressive steps, with invaluable teaching notes suitable for teachers of all musical abilities. Demonstration and backing audio tracks are provided for teaching and performance.

Singing Sherlock is a character created by Val Whitlock and Shirley Court (Sherlock being a play on their names 'Shirley' and 'Whitlock'). The first book of the series was published in the early 2000s. The authors saw that there was a dearth of new material and that there were no books specifically covering the stages of children's vocal development alongside the songs. They recognised that there was a need for someone to commission composers who specialised in writing for children to write new material, which is exactly what they have done with Singing Sherlock.

Book one has recently received an update, and book five was also released earlier this year. For book five the material is set out in a new format, with songs from new and previously unpublished composers, as well as updated vocal clues which are represented by emojis. Books two to four are in the process of being modernized to similar formats as books one and five. The authors of the series have recently given an interview about their fifth book.
