With the premiere of Gluck’s Alceste, the Burgtheater Vienna reopened its doors, concluding a period of mourning that had been decreed following the death of Archduchess Maria Josepha. A mixture of cantata and concert piece, Beethoven's Choral Fantasy is often seen as a precursor to the Ode to Joy in the Ninth Symphony. The main source for this new Carus publication is the first edition of the parts, published in 1811 and corrected by Beethoven. It also contains an English singing version in a translation by Natalia Macfarren from the nineteenth century.

Two songs for unaccompanied upper voices: I sing of a maiden and This day, both originally conceived in 1966, with words from fifteenth-century texts. While contrasting in character, both embody a richly expressive harmony, with opportunities in each for the upper soprano part to be sung solo (or by a small group of voices, if preferred).

Breitkopf & Härtel

The Sephardic culture originates from the Jewish population of Spain that was banished at the end of the 15th century; its unique Spanish dialect Ladino found musical expression in ballads and lyrical songs. Ohad Stolarz has taken eight of these songs and arranged them for four-part mixed choir. These arrangements may be performed both as a cycle and individually, being also suitable for non-professional choirs due to their lack of difficulty.

In late September 1874, shortly after losing his hearing, Smetana started work on Vyšehrad, the first symphonic poem in what would become a six-part cycle with the title Má vlast. For this new Bärenreiter edition, Hugh Macdonald has corrected many errors in the first edition; drawing on sources such as the autograph and first print of the orchestral version, as well as the printed piano duet version.

During his time as conductor of the Detmold court orchestra, the young Brahms was inspired by the local wind ensemble to compose two serenades. Serenade No. 2, scored for five pairs of winds, violas, cellos, and string basses (without violins) is strongly reminiscent in sound of Mozart’s wind serenades. It is now available in this practical Breitkopf edition based on the Johannes Brahms Complete Edition.
