New Publications, New Sheet Music Publications - November 2018

Welcome to our hand-picked highlights from amongst new and recent sheet music publications, which this month include a volume of sacred oratorio choruses from Oxford University Press, music by Dvořák and Gluck from Bärenreiter, Christmas tunes for woodwind from Faber Music, and a facsimile reproduction of the score of Bartók's Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion.

Piano & Organ

This large four-movement work, written in 1893, was premiered by Rachmaninov and Pavel Pabst in Moscow. A few lines of poetry by Romantic poets preface each movement. This new edition is part of Alfred's Masterworks series.

Composed in 1876, Dvořák's only piano concerto has suffered numerous attempts by performers and editors to "upgrade" this pianistically unassuming work by adding stylisations of their own. Bärenreiter's new Urtext edition frees the work from these interventions and presents it in its authentic form. The principal source is the first complete print issued by the publisher Hainauer in 1883.

Full orchestral score also available.

With its thrilling, triumphal verve, it is no coincidence that the Toccata from Widor’s Fifth Organ Symphony is his best-known composition. Carus's new edition is based on the Paris edition of 1928/29, the last one to be published during Widor’s lifetime. The corrections which the composer made after the publication of this edition have also been taken into consideration. As well as this, earlier editions have been consulted for comparison to clarify individual variant readings.

Like almost all the great composers of Viennese classicism, Beethoven wrote for the mechanical organ, an instrument which was very popular with the public in its day, controlled by a cylinder and equipped with organ pipes. His compositions for this instrument are included complete in this Carus edition, carefully arranged for performance on a conventional organ. The Grenadiermarsch is available for the first time in an organ arrangement.

Strings & Ukulele

for Violin and Piano

The Easy Concert Pieces series is intended for tuition purposes and is particularly suitable for performance at auditions and school concerts. Volume 3 (intermediate) requires familiarity with the first four positions. Besides well-known works such as the famous Air by Bach, the Largo from Handel’s opera Xerxes and a movement from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, there are rewarding concerto and sonata movements by Küchler and Fiocco, as well as less familiar Romantic compositions by Rieding, Hille and Trowell.

The Sassmannshaus “Early Start” string methods cultivate playing together as early as possible. The first pieces can all be performed in canon; each piece is notated in violin, viola and bass clef so that all three string instruments can play together in any number and combination. The collection then continues with pieces by composers such as Rathgeber and Fux. Here the middle part may optionally be performed by a viola or second violin.

New incidental music was required for a performance of Shakespeare’s comedy Much Ado about Nothing in the Schönbrunn Schloßtheater in Vienna in 1920. This version arranged by the composer for string quartet only surfaced at an auction in 1984. The Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde [Society of Music Lovers] in Vienna succeeded in purchasing this three-movement version, now available from Schott almost a century after its creation.

Facsimile of the Draft Score and Paul Sacher's Annotated Copy

This publication presents two major handwritten sources from the holdings of the Paul Sacher Foundation: the draft score, which offers a fascinating glimpse into the sonata's genesis, and a whiteprint of the fair copy, which contains additions from Bartók and differs substantially from the definitive version in places. The volume also contains, on an enclosed CD, the radio recording of 1940, with Bartók and his wife Ditta Pásztory on the piano parts, as well as a new recording of the sonata in its original form.
