New Publications, New Sheet Music Publications - October 2018

Welcome to our hand-picked highlights from amongst new and recent sheet music publications, which this month include anthologies of opera arias from Boosey & Hawkes, Christmas piano music from Faber, collections of folksongs and French choral music, the launch of a new critical edition of the music of Tchaikovsky, and violin pieces by Joachim and Paganini.

Composed in 1800 and published as a Grande Sonate, Beethoven’s Piano Sonata in B flat major op. 22 marks the end of his first creative period. The only surviving handwritten source is a copyist’s manuscript that served as an engraver’s copy but which conflicts in many details with the original print. Bärenreiter's new publication is edited by Jonathan Del Mar.

Strings & Guitar

Joseph Joachim’s Fantasy on Hungarian Hungarian Themes (1850), and Fantasy on Irish [Scottish] Themes (1852) were his first virtuoso pieces for violin with orchestral accompaniment. The young Jewish-Hungarian musician spent many summers in England and the familiar Irish melodies held great appeal for English audiences. Bärenreiter's new Urtext edition presents both pieces in reductions for violin and piano.

Paganini’s Capriccio for solo violin is a work that is practically unknown in its original form, consisting of two movements: Andante and Presto. The first (Andante) is a variation based on Paisiello’s theme, In cor più non mi sento, while the second (Presto) is a virtuosic variation. Ricordi's new critical edition is based upon an autograph manuscript found in the Berlin Staatsbibliothek.

This set of inventive and hugely contrasting Études for solo violin was written between 2010 and 2014, the last two as commissions from the London Sinfonietta. The final piece in this eight-minute collection is the most unusual: serene and meditative, it utilises a novel technique by which the player sustains hushed three-note chords.

Carus's collection is a treasure trove for choirs wanting to explore music from France, containing forty-five sacred compositions for mostly four-part mixed choir, with works from the Renaissance to the present day. In addition to works by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Gabriel Fauré, and Camille Saint-Saëns, the collection includes first editions of previously largely unknown works by composers such as Adolphe Adam and Charles-Marie Widor.

Available Format: Sheet Music, CD

Set to a popular text by Walter de la Mare, this secular work is an expressive homage to J. S. Bach, combining lyrical vocal lines with a contrapuntal accompaniment.

Available Format: Sheet Music

Carus's collection explores the musical world of Great Britain and Ireland with twenty-one arrangements of English-language verse songs, canons, and ballads for mixed unaccompanied chorus. The folk songs are as diverse as the stories they tell: from the moving Greensleeves and Two hearts beat as one, through charming settings such as A rosebud by my early walk and There were three ravens, to saucy and tongue-in-cheek songs such as Dashing away with the smoothing iron and The mother-in-law.

Available Format: Sheet Music/CD

In spring 1816 Franz Schubert, just nineteen years old, completed his second setting of the Stabat Mater. Carus Verlag's new edition is the first to be based on a critical evaluation of the primary sources. It is a rewarding work for choral societies and choirs to perform, as the choir has the largest portion to sing, and the choral parts are not too demanding.

Vocal Score also available.

This is the first publication of the orchestral cycle Songs of Travel. Three of the nine orchestrations are by the composer, dating from 1905; the remainder were scored by his assistant Roy Douglas in 1960, two years after the composer’s death. Among the latter was the hitherto lost epilogue I have trod the upward and the downward path.
